Pepere

The man with the overalls and Choo-Choo Charlie hat—
he was big and strong, but I wouldn’t say fat.
A navy sailor he was,
arms like Popeye that would grip you just because.
A farmer at heart,
taught me to cook from the start.
Known as a five-dollar bill and a cup of coffee plumber,
he’d talk up a blue streak right into a slumber.
He had a heart as big as his wrenches,
a soft spot for widows he’d mention.
His wife they used to call Red.
He served her daily straight out of his bed.
Referred to her as Queenie and jumped through hoops,
my goodness, like I Dream of Jeannie.
Rice puddin’ was his specialty,
so goodin’ with all its formality.
Some called him needle;
one-liners he’d speak
until he was feeble.
A mighty presence he had,
none could deny,
that your sentiment was naturally
much obliged.
Courage I mustered,
to heaven he was ushered.
C’est la vie, c’est la vie.

Today is the third anniversary of “Pepere” my father in laws passing. I miss him very much. My family and I tell stories, and frequently use the one liners he was famous for. I wrote this poem in honor of his life. This is my personal recollection of my father in law. As a new bride, he taught me about cooking and shared recipes, and methods for His specialties. Thirty years later, I keep them going, but of course never quite as good as the way he made them. ”Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life you have imagined.” Henry David Thoreau
I love this quote! Pepere, we are all moving in the direction of our dreams! So much has happened in three years! You would be a great grandfather! You can be sure that Anabelle Grace will know who you are and how much we love, and miss you!
Until we meet again! ❤️
